ABOUT
Cities Like Oakland is an intimate short film that explores the limits of empathy and connection. It was shot in Oakland, California in April 2025.

The film wrapped post-production in September 2025 and is now currently being considered for several festivals.
The story follows Nicole (Trian Long-Smith), an Oakland therapist whose life unravels as she struggles to care for her clients in an increasingly polarized world.

Battling depression and guilt, she starts a journey -- across Oakland and within herself -- in search of meaning and grace.
CAST & CREW
TRIAN LONG-SMITH (NICOLE)
Trian is an accomplished actor and filmmaker from Oakland, CA, known for her roles in Succession and Law & Order. Passionate about exploring the human experience, she brings emotional depth to every project. Outside of acting, she's a devoted mother and creative thinking. Whether in front of or behind the camera, Trian is drawn to meaningful stories that connect with audiences on a personal level.
DESIRE LACAP (DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY)
Desire is a DP from Daly City, CA. Her work spans narrative films, documentaries, and music videos. Since 2022, she has built a global following through her filmmaking tutorials, creative insights, and thoughtful discussions on mental health and well-being. With a blend of cutting-edge technology and fresh perspectives, Desire’s work continues to surprise, inspire, and captivate audiences worldwide.
STEPHANIE FRANCO (PRODUCER)
Stephanie is a first generation Latina and producer based in Los Angeles. She's driven by a passion for storytelling that challenges perspectives, uplifts underrepresented voices, and fosters authenticity. She has worked with creative multimedia companies like Apple, Warner Brothers, and Netflix. She is passionate about producing narrative films that reflect the diversity of communities she grew up with.
L. LA MAR STEWART (1ST ASSISTANT DIRECTOR)
La Mar is an Assistant Director and Production Supervisor from the Bay Area with a career spanning feature films, television, and commercials. His credits include Blindspotting, Swiss Army Man, and Fruitvale Station, as well as projects for NBC, Fox, and Hulu. Always humble, La Mar attributes his success to hard work, a passion for storytelling, and the support of family and friends.
ALRIK BURSELL (EDITOR, PRODUCER)
Alrik is a filmmaker, producer, and editor based in the Bay Area with over a decade of experience across feature films, commercials, and video production. His debut feature, The Alternate, screened at over 20 festivals, earning 15 awards and securing worldwide distribution. He approaches each project with creativity and a drive to create impactful, inclusive stories.
JAROD BACKENS (WRITER, DIRECTOR, PRODUCER)
Jarod is a writer and filmmaker from Oakland, CA. His debut film, Cities Like Oakland, explores mental health and connection in our modern world. His scripts have earned recognition from The Black List and Austin Film Festival. He’s passionate about bringing teams together and telling impactful stories that explore the complexities of relationships, ambition, and resilience. Jarod is currently developing a feature set in the Bay Area.
